Bobbins are turned from Mountain mahogany (Cercocarpus ledifolius), a small shrubby tree that grows in the Rocky Mountain area of the United states. The wood is creamy white to light brown in color and has an extremely fine grain due to its slow growth rate. Mountain mahogany wood is not available commercially. The small logs that these bobbin are turned from was obtained from trees salvaged during construction of a firebreak road in southeastern Idaho.
